TOWNS AND PLACES IN THE BERKSHIRES

NORTH ADAMS

The second largest town in Berkshire County was once recognized as an industrial center, the location of several large companies including Sprague Electric.  Most of them are gone, and Sprague Electric is now the home of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA).  North Adams has been going through many changes, and thanks to the establishment of MoCA, a new high tech industry is emerging.  The city is also the gateway to the Mohawk Trail (Route 2), a spectacular route that leads 50 miles east to Greenfield.  It is also a gateway to the road leading to the summit of Mount Greylock, the highest mountain in Massachusetts, where a spectacular panorama can be enjoyed.   Viewing the city from its surrounding hills,  North Adams appears more like a European village because of the presence of many church steeples.

2)WESTERN GATEWAY HERITAGE STATE PARK, whose exhibits are housed in the former railroad station, illustrates through dioramas and illustrations of the digging and completion of the Hoosac Tunnel, whose western portal is at North Adams.
THE MOHAWK TRAIL (Route 2), connects North Adams with Greenfield as one of the most scenic drives in New England.  Pictured here is the "Hairpin Curve" at Clarksburg, immediately east of North Adams.
